IEEE Software Top Pick
Over the past 25 years, from 1984 through 2008, IEEE Software published more than 1,200 peer-reviewed full-length articles. As part of its 25th anniversary celebration, Software's editorial and advisory boards embarked upon the ambitious task of distilling those articles into a compact list of recommended reading. The result was 35 articles that, in the committee's own words, represented the best of the bunch. One of these 35 was:
'Provoking Creativity: Imagine What Your Requirements Could be Like'
by Neil Maiden, Suzanne Robertson and Alexis Gizikis, and published in IEEE Software in September/October 2004 21(5), 68-75. The article was one of only 2 in the field of requirements engineering selected by the committee.
The full list of the 35 Top Picks will be published in the January/February 2009 issue of IEEE Software. Dr Sara Jones is Co-investigator in a new research project with the School of Arts - "Information Technology and its Use in the Context of Museums and Art Galleries".

Three new JISC funded research projects:
a) Sara Jones and Panayiotis Zaphiris with colleagues from Middlesex University have been awarded a new project (£199,983) from JISC titled "Information Spaces for Collaborative Creativity". This project will address a recurrent problem in design education: that students are sometimes disengaged from key 'creative conversations' and that this problem can be exacerbated by learning technologies present in the classroom or the students' wider networked world. The project will deploy trial 'information spaces' that will provide learners with the appropriate artefacts and modes of interacting with a learning situation, and with their peers and tutors, to enable them to engage more flexibly and effectively in conversations characterised by innovation and reflective, critical thinking. The project will run for 2 years.
b) Stephanie Wilson, Chee Siang Ang and Panayiotis Zaphiris have secured a new JISC grant (£14,861) to look at the use of eye-tracking technologies and methods to explore the usability and learner experience of Multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) e.g. Second Life. The project will run for 5 months.
c) Chee Siang Ang (Jim) and Panayiotis Zaphiris, alongside colleagues from Oxford University, King's College and University of Leicester have been awarded £5,000 from JISC to organize a new workshop on the topic of 3D Virtual Worlds and Social Learning.

Funding of £250,000 is available over 2 years to appoint a Centre director and one researcher who will coordinate activities and seek to grow self-sustaining activities in the medium term. Anticipated outcomes include new undergraduate and postgraduate offerings related to creativity and innovation, new consultancy offering, and institution-wide research projects.

Neil Maiden has given a talk entitled 'Creativity in Requirements Engineering' to the International Institute of Business Analysis, in London on the evening of 24th September 2008. The abstract of the talk is:
"Traditionally requirements for computer-based systems are elicited from stakeholders by analysts. However the advance of technical solutions means that stakeholders are increasingly unaware of what is possible. We view requirements engineering as a creative process in which stakeholders and designers work together to create ideas for new systems that are eventually expressed as requirements. In this presentation I will outline workshops, techniques and tools that have been applied to support creative requirements processes, and provide some opportunities for you to use these solutions in your own requirements processes."

Neil King one of the departments researchers successfully completed his sponsored skydive for the National Library for the Blind on Sunday 24th April with the weather finally holding out. It was a full on adrenaline rush from start to finish. At 12,000 feet he exited the plane with two instructors and then went through freefall for around 40 seconds till he had descended to the height of 5,000 feet, where upon he opened the parachute. It was a bit nerving to look up and see that the lines where twisted but thanks to the training Neil had received he was competent, and clam enough, to know what to do to rectify it. After that it was a gentle return to earth with a smooth landing. An amazing experience!
Thanks to everyone who has supported Neil in this challenge to raise money for the National Library for the Blind (NLB). He has received pledges totalling over £600 which is great. If you still have to make good your pledge, you can visit www.justgiving.com/nlb which has been set up to accept secure payments by debit or credit card.
